Ham radio: the original social network

Purdue’s ham radio club turns 100.
During open house, members can spend their time however they want. Most of the time, members learn more about ham radio, make new contacts from around the world and fix radios. One time, a few members even made a credit card scanner just for fun.

Hail Purdue! (BSEE 1977)

Cool. Did you belong to the club back then?
Elwood Downey, WB0OEW says
Yes, I spent many late nights there. My favorite operating postion was the Drake station, which is why I own a TR4Cw to this day. Our unofficial mascot was Yogi Bear (W9YB), and even more unofficially we would sign as Yogi Bear.
I’m not sure when they consider the start of the actual club, but 1913 is usually considered the date of the first successful QSO from campus, see more history ar http://www.w9yb.org/?page_id=46.
BTW, I found I can not post from my iPad because it does not include the hints to answer the authentication, I only see those when I post from a laptop. The captcha is much easier though, thanks for changing that, but I guess that weakens it too.
Elwood Downey, WB0OEW says
Doh! I meant to say we also sometimes signed as Yellow Bananas.

The article on Purdue’s club only says that it’s “Purdue’s longest-standing club.” There’s no mention of a founding date or of its turning 100. Where did the headline come from?

Hmmmm. The University of Michigan is celebrating its 100th anniversary, so I guess I assumed they were also.
