I’ve been putting off writing about my Dayton adventure since I got back because I don’t quite know where to start. I had a blast there on many different levels.
Probably the most fun thing was meeting people. I met lots of people who used my study guides or purchased my other books, and I really enjoyed giving them buttons or stickers. I met a lot of people at the QRP-ARCI’s FDIM Vendor Night. Many had already either used my study guides to get their licenses or to teach a class, and some had already purchased The CW Geek’s Guide to Having Fun with Morse Code. Below are two pictures taken by Jeff, KE9V, at Vendor Night:
A good example of this is meeting Jim, K0RGI, on the bus from the hotel to Hara Arena. We got talking about this and that, and I mentioned that I had written a book on Morse Code. At that point, he said something like, “You’re Dan, KB6NU??” He seemed really surprised when I said that I was. As it turned out, he had recently purchased my book and had enjoyed it. That was very gratifying to me. He seemed pretty happy when I gave him one of my “I’m a CW Geek” buttons.
At the Hamvention, I gave out buttons to pretty much anyone who asked. I also gave one to some that didn’t ask, including:
- Dale, WA8EFK, our ARRL Great Lakes Division Director,
- Piero Begali, I2RTF, of Begali Keys fame,
- Scott Robbins, W4PA, of Vibroplex, and
- Gordon West, WB6NOA, proprietor of the Gordon West Radio School and one of the stalwarts on Ham Nation
I have a bunch more posts to write about Dayton, including:
- the purchases I made at Dayton,
- musings on what seemed to be higher attendance and more stalls in the flea market,
- selling my books,
- the forums at Dayton, and
- some thoughts on technical trends.
Stay tuned for those.
