Since there’s such a dearth of amateur radio programs for the Mac, I’ve been thinking of doing some of my own. So, I started searching the web for some online resources. I’ve come up with the following:
- CocoaDevCentral. Lots of articles on different aspects of Mac programming.
- CS193: Mac OS Cocoa Programming. These are the slides from a course offered at Stanford.
- Apple Developer Connection – Cocoa Guides. The Apple website has a lot of good info on how to program using the Cocoa interface.
One thing is clear to me. I’m going to have to either upgrade this Mac to OSX 10.5 or buy one of the new Macs. I’m leaning towards buying a new one. :)
I asked on the Ham-Mac mailing list, and they suggested the following resources:
- Mac OSX-dev mailing list
- CocoaBuilder.Com. This site includes archives of both the cocoa-dev and xcode-users Apple lists along with the macosx-dev list run by OmniGroup.

When I first installed OS X, back when it was still beta, I tried my hand with Mac programming. It was easier than I expected, but still too much for me to pursue as a hobby. I haven’t seriously looked at it since, but I know it’s come a long, long way — especially with the development of XCode.
As a relatively new ham, I’ve surveyed the Mac landscape of software and have been somewhat disappointed. I keep thinking that I’m going to probably end up getting it some myself.
I agree you should get a new Mac. I’m happy to support anyone who wants to justify that sort of purchase. ;-)

Thanks, Greg! I’ll have my XYL give you a call. :)

Why would you want to spend time doing this? Is it because you don’t have anything else to do?
I am sure you have better things to do than reinvent the wheel. You do have something better to do, don’t you?

Thanks for the reminder, Todd. I looked at this at one point, but it seemed pretty expensive. Looking at this again, it looks like the personal edition is $100, which doesn’t seem too bad. Are there mailing lists and/or websites where schmucks like me can get help?
