NBC was actually filming a story on ham radio emergency communications in Hawaii when the state issued the false alarm that a nuclear missile was headed their way. Here’s the report on that false alarm and how ham radio could have provided emergency communications.

A new net devoted to Makers (DIYers, homebuilders) has started up on Echolink conference node 9229 (*TECHLINK*). All those interested in building their own “stuff” are invited. If you’re not familiar with WebSDR you may be in for a treat! It is like having a communications receiver in your pocket. Works on any device. Takes a bit of playing to master, but effective in allowing one to check band conditions monitoring from other countries etc. Should you want to use it with your smart phone, be sure to click on the “mobile version”, and you will need to use earphones. With a desk top computer that will not be necessary.
