Part 97.1 sets out the “basis and purpose of amateur radio. Paragraph (b) of that section reads, “Continuation and extension of the amateur’s proven ability to contribute to the advancement of the radio art.”
I’ve long thought that we should petition that this paragraph be changed to something like, “Continuation and extension of the amateur’s proven ability to contribute to the science and art of electronic communications.” After all, we do much more than just radio these days. And, what we do is more than an art, it’s science as well.
What do you think?

I think you have something there. When the Communications Act was written back in the 1930’s continuation of the radio art was appropriate. With 80 plus years of communications and electronics advancements, it’s probably high time for the whole act to be examined and amended.

Science is not MORE than art and art pretty much covers all the great things that humans do. I like the original.

While one might read “art” to include all of the wonderful things than can be done with electronics, I agree that your statement much more clearly points to what modern amateur radio is all about.
I say, send it in and begin the discussion.
