A while back, I proposed that we begin having short classes on EchoLink addressing topics on the Extra Class test. After getting a couple of e-mails from interested folks, I decided to just go ahead and hold one on the W8UM repeater (W8UM-R on EchoLink). We had several checkins, and in general, I think it went very well. We discussed the questions in section E9A.
We have had several sessions now, and while it’s going pretty well, I’d love to get more people to check in. We meet at 0200Z. If you are studying for the Extra Class test, please join us, and if you know someone who is, please tell them about the net.

I don’t know whether I’d want to participate or not, but if you choose to use EchoLink it will be decided for me. To the best of my knowledge EchoLink requires Windows. Those of us who choose to use a Unix-based operating system such as Mac OS X or Linux (for security reasons among others) would be left out.

EchoLink is also available for iPhone as a free download.
Echolink runs just fine through Wine on Linux. However, if you would like to stay with native apps, then you can use Qtel. Qtel will connect to the Echolink servers and allow you to connect to Echolink nodes. Qtel also has VOX which the Windows app does not have.

I dropped into the Echolink room but the connection was pretty scratchy and intermittent. Not sure if that was my internet connection or what. What I did hear sounded pretty good.
