Shame on the ARRL again for once again allowing a division director to resign with only months to go before the next election. It was reported today that Anthony Marcin, W7XM, is resigning as Pacific Division director after serving two and a half years of a three-year term. This very un-democratic maneuver is a common one for the ARRL, and, this time, no excuse was even give for the director’s resignation.
Vice director John Litz, NZ6Q, is the fellow being elevated to director this time. This move is even more un-democratic because Litz was appointed vice director in April 2024.
As I’ve written many times, a director’s seat should remain vacant if a director resigns less than a year before their term is up, or a special election should be held. Elevating a vice director like this is just a way to rig an election, giving the vice director the unfair advantage of running as an incumbent.
And they wonder why they’re losing members….
I’m not sure why you would say a resignation is undemocratic. People resign from positions for many reasons – health, job situations, family situations, etc. I wouldn’t judge without knowing the facts.
Sorry, Ken, but some some things become obvious by repetition— I believe the point of the article is that directors who resign with less than a year should have the post left vacant until the next set of elections, thus giving an open field to replacement instead of a selected member filling the post for a short time and then running with the advantage of being an “incumbent”. The current system allows boards to become self perpetuating with their ideas and lessening the possibility of new blood that could push different items. Perhaps new blood is good for an organization!
It’s an organization that is a legend in its own mind. Losing members and claiming to be getting stronger. Too many egos and buddy-buddies!
