This morning, my section manager, Jim, K8JK, called me. We talked about a lot of different things, including the new OO/VM program, ARRL membership, and amateur radio clubs.
One of the coolest things to come out of this discussion was the story of his experience with a club in Michigan’s Upper Penninsula. He said that the club was having problems getting members to run for office. Jim said that he suggested that the club pay the officers’ ARRL dues for the year that they serve as a club officer.
That worked like a charm. Next election, they had six guys running for president!
I like this idea for a couple of reasons:
- It’s a way to show some appreciation to those who step up and take club leadership positions. Being a club officer can be a thankless task. I know. At one time or another, I’ve served as club president and treasurer, and I’m currently the club’s public service officer.
- It makes ARRL members of some hams who might not otherwise join.
I’d take this a step further and perhaps get the ARRL to offer a discount on these memberships to officers who serve affiliated clubs. This would be a real benefit for affiliated clubs, and not really cost the ARRL all that much. It may even spur some hams to form some new clubs. That sounds like a win-win situation for the ARRL and for ham radio clubs.
