No Internet, No Problem: How to Send Bitcoin by Amateur Radio
In an age where governments are trigger happy at censoring or shutting down networks, it is reassuring to know that Bitcoin can operate sans internet. Network censorship, after all, is not some dystopian storyline but a power exercised by many democratic governments across the world. Thankfully, there are solutions that enable people to send and receive bitcoin even in a worst case scenario. For an advanced technology, it turns out that cryptocurrency can get surprisingly low-tech.
Celebrate a century of radio
With the end of World War I, the United States government lifted restrictions that had been placed on harnessing the electromagnetic energy around us to make radio transmissions.
By 1920 KDKA in Pittsburgh became the first licensed broadcast commercial radio station in the US.
One hundred years later, Bethlehem’s (PA) National Museum of Industrial History presents the exhibit “Don’t Touch That Dial: 100 Years of Radio,” which traces the history of the radio industry from the days when stations went by call signs like 2XG all the way up to the debut of the iPod. You can check it out through Nov. 3.

Amateur radio society recruiting members young or old
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Amateur radio operators relay radio messages during natural and man-made disasters and fun events like Pittsburgh’s Great Race. And they don’t get a dime.
They can’t, according to Federal Communications Commission regulations.
Instead, their noncommercial messages relay information — often when cellphone towers are damaged and unavailable, such as in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria’s devastation in Puerto Rico. Health and welfare messages are relayed to first responders and emergency services coordinators.

Dan,
Did you see the last month’s “success” with bitcoin was with JS8Call.? A new digital sub mode and new digital currency transaction. Wonder what ham life will be like when the sunspots come back!
Clive (G6TDI) says
JS8Call is not realy going to work with BitCoin, think about how the public ledger works, then work out the data rates involved for say just one transaction a second on average. Oh and if things got that dire you were in your hidden hole in the ground heating your canned food over a candle have a think about how BTC realy works ask yourself where all the electrical energy needed for BTC was going to come from.
Yes it might be a fun science project but there is no way it’s going to be practical for real world usage.
