Amateur radio in the news: IA club receives service award, “Bleak House” was home of 73 magazine, Radio City closes

Story County Amateur Radio Emergency Service receives service award. At the forefront of parades, bike-a-thons, family events and natural disasters, Story County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) is always prepared with a slew of complex digital equipment and backup systems in hand. It is ARES’ members’ dedication and hard work in public service that have earned the program the 2018 Governor’s Volunteer Service award this summer. The award program is coordinated by Volunteer Iowa and is currently in its 35th year. It honors individuals and groups that are dedicated to volunteerism.

The history of Bleakhouse. “Bleak House,” Charles Dickens’ novel which was serialized appeared in 1852 and ’53, tells the story of doomed love, fateful secrets, murder and loss of fortune — with a bit of happiness thrown in as well. Peterborough’s Bleakhouse has a story as well, though one that’s not quite as dramatic as Dickens’.

In 1962, publisher Wayne Green moved into Bleakhouse. He served as a caretaker for the society; the house served as a home for his family and office space for his ham radio magazine, 73 Amateur Radio Today.

Minnesota’s only ham radio store has last hurrah. In yet another sign of the times, Minnesota’s last-remaining ham radio store is winding down operations and preparing to close after 36 years in business. This past week, owners Dan and Maline Fish announced on their website that it’s “time to retire.”
