Heads up: An invasion is coming. It seems to me that folks hereabouts should be forewarned that in a few weeks we will be subjected to what might be called an “invasion.” Oh, it won’t be by zombies, aliens from outer space, or locusts – nope, it’s going to be by very friendly “Hams”, known more formally as “amateur radio operators.” Yep, thousands of Hams are expected to converge on our county fairgrounds for a three day event known as the “Hamvention.”
Ham radio connects at festival. The North Hills Amateur Radio Club will hold a bigger, better demonstration of their craft in the pavilion at the Mars Train Station property during Mars New Year festival May 4 to 6.
Mars resident Al Houston is the chairman of the club’s Mars New Year project, and he is excited to incorporate the use of ham radios into the scientific theme of the event. The club had a booth at the last Mars New Year, and it plans to improve and enhance the display in May.
Event at Binghamton tower celebrates Marconi’s birthday. Members of the Binghamton Amateur Radio Association will talk to amateur (“ham”) radio operators throughout the world from the historic Marconi Tower (45 Lewis St. in Binghamton) on Saturday. The event commemorates the birth of Guglielmo Marconi (one of the inventors of radio) in celebration of birthday in April 25.
The Marconi Tower is the last remaining of four towers (two in Binghamton and two in Scranton, Pa.) erected by Marconi in 1913 for his pioneering experiment that first successfully demonstrated radio communication with a fast-moving vehicle (a train running between Scranton and Binghamton). More information about the tower and its role in radio history is presented at www.lutins.org/marconi.
