Council likely to approve taller towers. The Brookings City Council Monday likely will approve an ordinance to allow ham radio towers up to 70 feet in height in residential neighborhoods, despite concerns residents outlined this summer regarding safety and aesthetics. The issue caught the attention of residents in the Dawson Tract north of town in June, when residents there learned a ham radio operator on Susan Place wanted to extend his tower from 40 to 70 feet.
‘Call K for Cornwall’ as county gets unique radio call sign. Ham radio operators will be able to call K for Cornwall thanks to a campaign by a group of amateurs based in the tiny village from where the first transatlantic signal was sent. Poldhu Amateur Radio Club, based on the Lizard Peninsula, launched a campaign for Cornwall to have its own call sign after the news that the Cornish people had been granted official minority status. Ofcom, which regulates all aspects of the airwaves, including the amateur side, has now granted permission. Cornwall Council leader John Pollard that it was only fitting that a county with such a rich radio tradition should have its own call sign.
On-air ‘hams’ aided by new technology. Even in these days of incessant tweets, texts and Facebook posts, a century-old form of social media is drawing new enthusiasts by embracing the latest technology. Members of amateur, or “ham” radio clubs in the area may use everything from a telegraph key and Morse code to satellites to transmit video, digital data and voice communications.
