Fellow blogger and all around good guy, KE9V, has written a short review of Hamvention’s new digs, the Greene County Fair and Expo Center. I certainly don’t want to steal his thunder, so I suggest that you all go read his blog post. It sounds to me like the Hamvention organizers have chosen a reasonable place to hold the event next year.
In a previous post, I mentioned the inevitable t-shirt. I just bought one. They’re only 19 bucks with shipping. (I should have thought about this myself and put something up on Cafe Press. I still might.)
Another thought occurred to me yesterday. At next year’s Hamvention, some enterprising ham could probably make a few bucks by renting a van or even a school bus and taking folks on a “nostalgic tour” of Hara Arena, if it’s still standing by then.
Here are some things that they could possibly do:
- Highlight the spot where the sewer main broke.
- Have a picnic dinner in the crumbling parking lot. Maybe they could get one of the community groups to grill up some brawurst.
- Operate a special-event station.
Whaddaya think? Got any other ideas?
If Hara is to be torn down between now and Hamvention 2017, I hope that DARA gets their hands on some of the arena seats. I bet they could sell those for beaucoup bucks at the new venue.

I find that shirt symbolic of the disappointing and tenacious habit of Amateur Radio enthusiasts to try to somehow improve their personal status by being exclusive of people who don’t share their personal experience, whether it is CW skills, tubes, homebrewing, or attending a Hamvention at a particular location. I have had a license for nearly 20 years and getting tired of the ‘real ham’ divisive doo-doo, it prevents our hobby from rising to the heights it is capable of.
We are all real hams.
Thank you for letting me Speak My Mind. :)

Clark, I hear where you’re coming from, but I think this was meant more as a joke than as an indication of how the wearer feels. I know I bought one just for a joke.

Regarding the HARA area tours. Likely the area will be off-limits and consider trespass if anyone tries to visits old haunts.
Jus’ sayin’
