In my news feed this past month, there were two announcements of new amateur radio clubs being formed. I’m not so sure how often that happens anymore, so I thought I’d spotlight them here. I’ve always said that if you don’t like the current club in your area, start your own!
New amateur radio group established in Upshur County
BUCKHANNON, WV — The Upshur County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Upshur County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) would like to announce the creation of an amateur radio enthusiast club for our area. The idea behind this club is to provide a group for individuals interested in amateur radio to learn, share information, and enhance skills.
We invite all interested persons in Upshur and surrounding counties to join us for the inaugural meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Buckhannon Public Safety Complex, 24 South Florida St, Buckhannon WV. If you are unable to attend in person, email [email protected] and we will send you a link to attend virtually.
Amateur radio club members are pros at broadcasting
PERRY COUNTY, PA – The Perry County Amateur Radio Club, founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, wants county residents to know that their organization is a club for the community. Started in 2021 by Matthew Morrison, Scott Shedd, Chris Fuller and a few other local amateur radio enthusiasts during the pandemic to build community, the club has grown to roughly 20 regular attendees, and has begun offering license exams and community events.
The club, while still growing, has begun to set its roots in the county by offering license exams for aspiring radio operators and hosting public operating events with the goal of getting more people interested.
This last club was formed in 2022.
Tuned in: Amateur radio club connects listeners through long-distance hobby
[CARMEL, IN] Piglet Radio isn’t the only local club for amateur radio enthusiasts, but its goal is to promote the long-distance hobby by frequently bringing its members together. The club was launched in summer 2022 by Hamilton County residents Chris Pacovsky (call sign W9CZK), Alexandra Auvinen (AC9XK), David Estes (KC9AAP), Derek Fronek (N9TD) and Scott Messick (W95DM). Piglet Radio (N9BCN) wants to grow membership and interest in the hobby through events, online forums and monthly meetings.
“We wanted something different,” said Pacovsky, Piglet Radio’s president. “We wanted a radio club with a more pronounced social aspect and comradery along with a technical focus.” Currently 30 members strong and growing, the club is a space for amateur radio enthusiasts to discuss and develop ways to use the radio frequency spectrum to communicate, often with people around the world through purchased and self-made equipment.
