I found this on reddit and love it so much that I asked permission to blog it. This guy’s girlfriend’s family got vanity plates with the grandfather’s call sign to honor his memory. How great is that?
I know several hams who have their father’s or grandfather’s call signs, and it’s such a great tribute. If WA2SHE had been my father or grandfather (or mother or grandmother, for that matter), I would have his (or her) call sign and a vanity plate with that call sign.

It’s a nice tribute but I’m curious how they got by the government red tape to get a ham call license plate. Here in Ohio, you have to present a copy of your license at the DMV every time you renew etc. I noticed theirs did not have amateur radio Operator on the plate. So maybe somehow they got it as a plain vanity plate. A bit confusing for me but once again a nice gesture. Be N8GBU.

I’m guessing that these are just regular vanity plates, not ham plates.

The NY state plate is a ham plate…I know, because I have one. And I’m mystified too, since you have to provide NY DMV with a copy of your license before they issue the plate.
And the answer is: WA2SHE is a valid callsign issued to Daniel Sala of Gloversville, NY. I’m guessing a grandson who actually holds the original call.

Besides the NY State license plate, we all just have vanity plates with the call letters. They’re not ham call license plates.
