As reported earlier, I taught another one-day Tech class last Saturday. 14 out of 15 who attended passed the test.
I haven’t asked students in the previous classes to evaluate the class, but now I’m thinking that it might be a good idea. Here are the questions that I’m thinking of asking:
Class Content and Materials (Rate on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 means you strongly agree and 1 means you strongly disagree. Leave additional comment in the comment box below.)
- The class met my expectations.
- The course materials were useful (organized, easy to refer to, substantive).
- The instructor was knowledgeable about the subject and presented the material in an organized, effective way.
- The venue was a good place to learn about amateur radio.
Other Questions
- What did you like most about the class (e.g., content, download materials, etc.)?
- What did you like least about the class?
- What could be done to improve the class?
- If we offered other amateur radio classes on topics targeted at newcomers, like how to choose a radio, how to get involved in public service, etc., would you attend?
- Any suggestions on how we might reach others who might benefit from this class?
What do you think? Are there any other questions that I might add to this survey?

How about a “The class length was appropriate”? I’m curious whether the one-day students (who likely don’t have time for longer classes) recognize that they need more time, or not.

Dan,
We’ve been using survey monkey to survey our students. It works quite well.
One thing we do is capture some demographic info and why they are interested in getting their license.
I set up a sample survey here if you (or anyone) wants to try it:

The instructor encouraged and answered questions in an understandable way.

I’ve helped out with VE sessions after a number of classes, some of which were taught by the same people, and occasionally the failure rate was higher–a lot higher, in at least one case–than average. (In an “average” session, at least 85% of the applicants passed, by my estimate.) I’ve always wondered why some classes went better than others, To that end, I’d ask questions like:
1) Do you have a background in electronics? Circle all that apply:
__electronics hobbyist
__took a course in electronics in high school or vocational school
__have a degree in engineering or science
__previously held an amateur radio license
__other:_____
2) Did you study for this test before taking the class? Check all that apply:
__read a Technician license study manual
– if so, which one?_______________
__read an introductory book on amateur radio
– if so, which one?_______________
__took practice exams on line
__other_________
And hey, K0NR, Survey Monkey looks pretty cool.
