James Brown was known as “the hardest working man in show business.” His Wikipedia page notes that “in a career that lasted more than 50 years, he influenced the development of several music genres.” Back in the day, you saw him everywhere–on TV, in concerts, and apparently also in the studio.
If I had to name the hardest working man in amateur radio, I’d have to say that it was Jason, KC5HWB. Like James Brown, he’s everywhere, too. He has a great YouTube channel and seems to be at nearly every major amateur radio event. He certainly works harder at it than I do.
He sends out an e-mail newsletter every week, and the latest one says,
I’ve got big news. The Ham Radio 2.0 channel just passed 200,000 subscribers! 🙌
When I started this channel in 2015, I never imagined this many people would be along for the ride. Whether you’re a longtime ham, a brand-new GMRS user, a Meshtastic tinkerer, or someone who just wants to be ready when the grid goes down, you’ve made this community what it is. Thank you.
200,000subscribers! That means that Jason has nearly twice as many subscribers to his YouTube channel than the ARRL has members! Now, I’ll grant you that there’s no cost to subscribing to his channel, while it costs $59/year to be an ARRL member, but think the comparison says something.
What it says to me is that Jason is giving a lot of hams what they want. Whether it’s equipment reviews, equipment give-aways, or tips on opeating POTA or setting up a Meshtastic network, Jason’s channel seems to be hitting the mark. I think the ARRL really needs to take a page out of his book.
Jason is reaching an audience that the ARRL is either ignoring or has no clue is out there. If you haven’t seen any of Jason’s videos, give them a look. Then, let me know what you think.
