Yesterday, someone reminded me recently that Great Lakes Division seat is up for election this year, and that the deadline for filing petitions is two months away. I know that I’m late with this, but I’m trying to find out if anyone in the division is thinking about running, or if there is someone out who would be a good candidate.

It might be too late to do anything this election cycle, but perhaps not if we can get organized quickly. If we value the ARRL at all, we really can’t let things continue the way they are.

I left four or five years and haven’t heard or read one reason at all to rejoin. The ARRL needs to completely fail so new talent can pick up the trademark, domains, URLs, LoTW, etc. Sell the HQ because there’s no need for a physical location for a non-profit like the ARRL and use the proceeds to put an attorney on retainer, hire a lobbying firm, and maybe a couple of employees to manage websites, domains, etc. Open source LoTW and let the community rebuild it into something modern and less kludget. Let QST go the way of other printed catalogs full of ads in lieu of a volunteer run online website.
I clearly don’t know all the legal and accounting aspects of that. But I do know the ARRL in its current form is irrelevant and beyond saving. The composition of the board and the election process is just as bad, if not worse, than the CEO. And does the ARRL really do enough to warrant a board, and a president, and a CEO? It’s a lot of chiefs representing very few members presiding over nothing substantive.
The ARRL needs to die so it can be reborn.
