Interesting Stuff from the Mailing Lists

December 18, 2008 By Dan KB6NU 1 Comment

Here’s more interesting stuff that has landed in my inbox in the last day or two:

  • Manhattan Pad Cutter (qrp-l.org mailing list). KI4STU says,

[[To make pads for Manhattan construction,]] why not try this hand punch from Harbor Freight. If you modify it ala K7QO’s directions (1MB PDF, with pictures and very useful manhatten building techniques), it punches neat little round circles out of thin PCB. Superglue them down, and you have islands.

If you’re getting a Dremel, you can make a jig for it to cut slots in PCB, making pads for DIP’s. I made one, and got my idea for it from this Flickr photo.

  • Make Your Own Printed Circuit Board. This MAKE magazine video shows you how to do it.
  • QSO Spotter. Hamilton, KD0FNR’s little gadget makes it easier to map out they stations in a QSO and get the distance between them and the watts per mile figure. Just type in the two call signs and you’ll get the QSL addresses and the distance between them.

Thanks for the link to how to make your own PCBs. I had discussed this with some people a while back, but had never actually seen it done. Looks easy enough so long as you don’t get the chemical solution all over you. ;)
