I love the idea of this award, and while there are many worthwhile projects out there, I they made a great choice for the first award. Personally, I’ve been using a K3NG keyer for several years now, and it’s really performed flawlessly for me….Dan
The Amateur Radio Software Award committee has announced Anthony Good, K3NG, as the winner of the first ever Amateur Radio Software Award for his project, the K3NG Arduino CW Keyer. In addition to the certificate above, K3NG will receive a cash prize of $200.
The award committee considered many factors when choosing a project for this award, including its impact on furthering the interests of amateur radio, technical innovation, and community involvement. With that in mind, the reasons that this project was chosen for the award are:
- It connects makers and ham radio operators.
- It encourages people to get into CW and become amateur radio operators.
- The keyer uses readily available and low cost hardware.
- Extensive documentation is available, including the open source code.
- There is an active email community providing support. This makes the project ideal for learning and tinkering.
- K3NG encourages collaborative work by engaging the community and welcoming contributions. The project has been active since 2013 and has enjoyed continued contributions from its code committers.
The Amateur Radio Software Award is an annual international award for the recognition of software projects that enhance amateur radio. The goal of the award is to promote amateur radio software development that adheres to the same spirit as amateur radio itself: innovative, free and open.
