ICQ Podcast Episode 412 – More Workshop Tips

September 13, 2023 By Dan KB6NU 1 Comment

In this episode, I joined Martin Butler M1MRB, Caryn Eve Murray KD2GUT, Edmund Spicer M0MNG and Ed Durrant DD5LP, and we discussed

  • Polish Railways Fall Victim to Cheap Radio Attack. This hack was so simple, it’s almost unbelievable.

  • Programme Marks 56 Years of Helping Hams with Disabilities. HandiHams has been helping challenged hams for a long time. It’s a great program.

  • Retailer Radio Shack Making US Comeback. See Is The Shack coming back? here on KB6NU.Com.

  • Park Activation Marks Anniversary of Deadly Bombing. A special event station marks a tragic event here in the U.S.

  • Parachute Mobile Ham Sets QSO Record. Would you make a jump like this?

  • UK Radio Fans Launch Petition to Save BBCs Longwave Service. I’m not sure that I can receive this LW station here in the U.S., but I’m going to give it a go.

  • A Satellite Deployed a Drag Sail and Removed Itself from Orbit Five Years Early. Experimenters used amateur radio to deploy the sail.

This episode’s feature is More Workshop Tips.

Is The Shack coming back?

September 7, 2023 By Dan KB6NU 3 Comments

Radio Shack filed for bankruptcy in 2015 and 2017, and  in 2020, was acquired by a company called Retail Ecommerce Ventures. Retail Ecommerce ventures had acquired several well-known retailers, such as  Dress Barn, Pier 1, Stein Mart, Modell’s Sporting Goods, and Linens ’n Things, and some stories heralded this as a big comeback for Radio Shack.

That never panned out, apparently, because they were just purchased again by El Salvadoran company Unicomer Group, which has been operating RadioShack stores throughout Latin America and the Caribbean since 1998. The RadioShack website now says:

In 2023, Unicomer Group acquired RadioShack‘s intellectual property assets and domains in about 70 countries around the world, including: the United States, Canada, Europe, and China; and aims to manage the business of technology products with excellence, generating long–term profitable relationships with our partners.

This acquisition consolidates Unicomer Group as the majority owner of the brand worldwide, leading the technology market and expanding its value offer for its clients.

We want to continue developing the business, in as many territories as possible, creating support plans for operations, reaching our customers with our broad portfolio of products, looking for the best prices and constant innovation to provide solutions to technological problems.

Does this mean that they are going to be opening up a RadioShack store near you? The above kind of hints at that, who knows? Retail is a tough business, but some technology stores, such as Micro Center, seem to be doing well. Time will tell, I guess.

Ham gear from Radio Shack

Coincidentally, I happened to run into the ad below in an old issue of CQ.

I doubt that RadioShack is going to start selling ham gear again, but again, who knows? There are more radio amateurs now than ever, and the number of stores selling amateur radio gear is smaller than it was back in the 1990s and early 2000s.

From the trade magazines: The difference between NPN and PNP transistors, Radio Shack and Heathkit, resistors

December 3, 2022 By Dan KB6NU 3 Comments

What’s the Difference Between PNP and NPN Transistors?

There are numerous differences between NPN and PNP transistors, and even though both are bipolar junction transistors, the direction of current flow is the name of the game.

Both are used in various amplification and modulating circuits; the most frequent among its applications is being fully ON and OFF, which is referred to as switch mode. It’s easy to remember that NPN stands for Negative-Positive-Negative and PNP stands for Positive-Negative-Positive.

Resistors: Types and Applications

An ohm is an ohm, right? Not so fast — there are many different types of resistors. To insure that your circuit works and stays working, use the right type of resistor. In this article, you’ll learn about the common types of resistors and their special characteristics.

Want a Radio Shack t-shirt? Only 12 bucks.

November 20, 2018 By Dan KB6NU Leave a Comment

As most of you probably know, Radio Shack is alive and well and living on the internet (plus a few franchise retail locations). I get an email from them once or twice a week. This deal (?) arrived just now.

I’m actually tempted to get a TRS-80 t-shirt. The TRASH-80 was my first personal computer way back when. I wish they had it in a color besides white, though.

DISCLAIMER: I am not affiliated with Radio Shack in any way, nor do I get any commission from the sales of these shirts.
